20th Century Guitar
June, 1999

In the spirit of guitar greats such as Allan Holdsworth and Bill Connors, N.J.-based guitar ace Scott McGill takes his place as a forerunner of the late-90s jazz-rock fusion scene. McGill formed his group, The Hand Farm back in 1991 and their album debut was praised by a number of guitar fans. McGill has also gained acclaim as a member of the progrock outfit Finneus Gauge and went on to record two late '90s albums with them. McGill sites a number of influences on his music including Hendrix, John McLaughlin and Pat Martino, and his album debut for The Laser's Edge will surely find a home with all fans of guitar-based fusion. On Ripe, McGill's dazzling electric and acoustic fretboard work receives able assistance from Vic Stevens (drums) and Chico Huff (bass). At a ripe 32 years of age, McGill is poised for an auspicious and interesting career as an electric guitar virtuoso. With the release of Ripe, McGill's blend of high-energy guitar instrumentals makes him a player to keep an eye on.
